#FortheLoveofLilly: An Ode to the Iconic Resort Brand on its 60th Anniversary

I haven’t always loved Lilly, but I fell in love with it when I was in college, waitressing during the summers on Cape Cod. My mom, aunt, and grandmother all loved Lilly, but for most of my young adult life, I was focused on wearing band tees and jeans (oh those mid to late 2000s). But as I matured, so did my style. I loved the bright colors and nautical patterns in the summer and would treat myself during their midsummer sale after a good night or two of tips.

When I moved to Florida after college to start my first teaching job, this love affair with Lilly became an obsession. I moved thousands of miles away from my home, my family, and my friends to a completely different climate, and in my moments of loneliness and homesickness, I found myself looking towards their bright colors and whimsical patterns to cheer me up.

I remember telling myself on one bitter winter day in college, that when I graduated, I wanted to live somewhere I could wear pretty sundresses year round. I was lucky enough that that’s just what happened. Lilly has marked all of the biggest landmarks in my life since then, from my college graduation, to my first dates with my now-husband, to our wedding. I love sharing my love of Lilly with my family and friends both in person and on instagram.

One of the first things that drew me to the iconic brand after I moved here, was the founder’s story. Lilly Pulitzer was a trailblazer. She had just moved to Palm Beach after eloping with her second husband and she was bored. She too had left her family and moved to a strange place and was unsure of herself. She ended up starting a juice stand using the produce from her father in law’s orange groves to busy herself. However, the juice from the fruit kept staining her dresses, so she decided to have her dressmaker create some brightly patterned shift dresses to help her mask the stains. Little did Lilly know, her customers would be flocking to her juice stand for her dresses more than her juice! Her brand truly took off when a friend of hers from school, (none other than First Lady Jackie Kennedy herself!) wore one of her dresses in the public eye. The rest is resort wear history!

Lilly’s birthday was November 10th, and the brand always celebrates her day with wonderful travel gifts with purchase! This year, the gifts start November 8th and go through November 11th and coincide with the grand opening of their new Palm Beach location close to wear Lilly opened up her first store 60 years ago. This year the gifts will be featured in the print “Our Bohemian Queen”, which is a celebration of classic toile the brand is known for as well as the Barefoot Princess herself. The gifts range from a printed scarf keychain with any spend to a carry on suitcase with a $1500 spend.
